When Josie Ajak went to work at the Gloria Jeans coffee shop she manages in Australia, she didn't expect anything too crazy to happen. As a barista, you'll deal with some rude, sometimes ignorant customers. They might not know the difference between a latte and a cappuccino, but it's nothing Ajak can't handle.
However, on this October morning things were different. A a white female customer particularly had it out for her. "Get me a white lady,"the customer told Ajak according to BuzzFeed News. She refused to be served by a black person, so Ajak just kindly replied, "That's fine." She then went to tell her staff the woman was racist and they wouldn't be serving her. The woman left as she gave the staff a dirty look.
Since the incident, Ajak has received a tremendous amount of support through social media, receiving 17,100 Facebook reactions and almost 2,000 shares.
“I am so humbled,” Ajak shared with BuzzFeed News. “There have been phone calls to my store from all over Australia, from regular white Australians just calling to say ‘hi’, show their support, say they’re proud of me.”
