We figure the “Women Are Strong As Hell” theme of the July 2016 Glamour is supposed to be metaphorical, but… Would you take a look at Serena Williams’ muscles?! Wow. Get it, girl!
That...and the fact that she was just crowned as the highest paid female athlete globally, earning a staggering $28.9 million!
This is hardly the first glam mag cover the first lady of tennis has graced, but there’s a great photo spread, and interview inside revealing some new info.
The 34-year-old athlete opens up about her life now, saying that though she was “born to do tennis” she’s got other things on her mind… like starting a family. “I definitely want to have kids one day. That’s something I’ve always wanted since as long as I could remember.”
The interview covers her life in sports, talking about Wimbledon, her record vs. Steffi Graf’s, and whether or not Serena is the greatest tennis player of all time. “Am I the greatest?” she replied. “I don’t know. I’m the greatest that I can be.”
The 21-time Grand Slam winner also comments on the U.S. women’s soccer team’s legal battle seeking equal pay for equal work.
“These sports have a lot of work to do. And I really hope that I can be helpful in that journey because I do believe that women deserve the same pay. We work just as hard as men do. I’ve been working, playing tennis, since I was three years old. And to be paid less just because of my sex — it doesn’t seem fair.”
She brings her future children into the argument for equal pay. “Will I have to explain to my daughter that her brother is gonna make more money doing the exact same job because he’s a man? If they both played sports since they were three years old, they both worked just as hard, but because he’s a boy, they’re gonna give him more money? Like, how am I gonna explain that to her?”
Serena is killing it right now. Deservedly so.
Not only does she have the coveted cover of Glamour, she’s front and center on Beyoncé’s Lemonade visual album, and Epix debuted Serena, a documentary about her, this month.
