It’s no secret that racism is still alive and well in 2016, but it seems like over the past few years, and after this election especially, people have been downright bold with it. And one of the latest incident is sadly a direct flashback to Jim Crow!
Another racist incident in Florida (surprise, surprise) went down recently, this time at a high school in Jacksonville. School officials are investigating after someone taped signs above water fountains at First Coast High School, labeling them “colored” and “whites only.”
Of course, several on Twitter noted the direct correlation to racism and segregation laws in the South back in the day to keep whites and blacks “separate but equal.”
The county school superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti says that this incident is absolutely inexcusable. "The signs placed on top of the fountains are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated by our school district,” Dr. Vitti told the Florida Times Union. “We are investigating the matter to determine who is behind the action to provide the appropriate discipline and counseling.”
Is this back where our country is headed? With Trump really as our president-elect, people of color and other minority groups are genuinely afraid of what his presidency is going for them. And as more incidents like this arise, it’s clear that people are more and more comfortable expressing their true racist feelings SMH. Hopefully, whoever did this gets caught.
