“I Didn’t Want Us to Die:” 10-Year-Old Steers Truck To Safety After Driver Goes into Diabetic Shock

Special Agent Eric Salvador spent several miles trying to pull over a truck on I-65 in Montgomery, Al that was swerving in and out of lanes and running other cars off the road. He even called for backup as the truck appeared to refuse to stop despite the siren and flashing lights.

Imagine Salvador’s surprise when the car finally pulled over and instead of an insolent driver, Agent Salvador discovered a 10-year-old boy who just saved his neighbor’s life.

“I’ve been in law enforcement eight years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Salvador said in a statement, “Yes, absolutely a hero.”

Christopher Wheeler, 10, was riding with his 70-year-old neighbor when the older man went into a diabetic shock. Wheeler recalls his neighbor saying he needed a piece of candy. As a result of sporadic consciousness, the neighbor lost control of his vehicle.

“I told him to stop, and he kept going,” Wheeler told WSFA news. Wheeler knew he had to do something. “I put my foot on the brake, and I got the steering wheel and pulled it over and put it in park.”

Wheeler’s quick thinking may have saved dozens of lives that day. “He used his instinct to stop that truck and I know God was with him,” his great-aunt said.

Wheeler and his neighbor, who received a cookie when paramedics arrived, are both okay.

Now that he has narrowly escaped a terrifying demise, we look forward to seeing more greatness from the young man.
